Food for Oday and his four younger siblings

Oday describes his life before the bombing in Gaza as rich and good. In February of 2024 his father and neighbors were gunned down by a tank outside of his school, before his very eyes. His uncle who is just twenty years old was taken by the IDF that same month, they have not heard from him nor do they know if he is alive. Oday is now a 16 year old teen and the head of his house, responsible for feeding his four younger siblings. The youngest is just five years old. Oday has seen his life and home fall apart and his schools bombed to the ground. His home, his father, his friends – everything is gone. But Oday doesn’t have time for grief. He spends his day on social media, looking for donors and collecting food for his sibblings.
My name is Concetta. I’m based in NYC and am in touch with Oday daily. I send Oday money and he uses it to buy food – potatoes, eggplant, flour, anything he can find, and shares updates with me by picture and video. It’s much harder for kids like Oday who don’t speak english to raise money, which is why I have chosen to host his fundraising efforts. No teenager should have the responsibility he has.
Organizations on the ground are currently blocked from entering, making sending money directly to Gazan’s the only way to prevent them from starving. We are being presented with a uniquely intimate form of care -Your money will go directly into his pocket within two days, so he can go to the market and collect food for his sibbling’s meal that day.
Our goal is to create stability for Oday during this time. A one time donation is wonderful, but if each of us commits to even $10 per week as a subscriber, we can provide him with the consistent support. Together we can ease his food anxieties. We may feel powerless to stop this genocide, but we can give him the gift of consistency. The security of some funds in his accout once a week. This matters.
He has unimaginable burdens to carry. My hope is that we as a collective can hold just a small piece of it for him. I will continue to update you all who subscribe with his life and daily communications. As grim as it is to write this; if his family is killed I will redirect funds to another family in need. Oday reports that chicken is going for $200 per kilo. He had only water yesterday. Today he ate some beans thanks to a friend who fronted him some money. I am so eager to send him the first of the campaign $$, thanks to our collective! He will receive it in two days time, with 35 percent fees deducted (This is money deducted in Gaza by paypal which is absolutely unethical. Right now it’s the only way and no one is calling out banks from these exorbitant fees. Some banks charge as much as 45%). I told him I set up a fundraiser for him but he has no idea what to expect. I pray they sleep deeply tonight and look forward to sharing the news with him that funds are coming in the morning.
